Transiting the Panama Canal
Since the time of the early European explorers, seamen had been looking for a shortcut across the Americas. Going around the cape was too much time and too dangerous. In the 19th century the French began digging in what was then Colombia, but gave up. The Americans took to the task and completed it early and under budget. And now we were going to take the route from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea.
But Panama is more than just a ditch across the isthmus. The people and their cultures were a great part of the attraction.
