Conquering the frozen Cologne cathedral
The first trip down the Rhine was in November-December 2010 that allowed us to visit several Christmas markets from Basel to Amsterdam. It was a cold week to be on the river, and no place was colder than the nave at Cologne cathedral. This sailing was a late spring trip with a group of alums and friends of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. No Christmas markets, which did give many city squares a much different look without all the vendors crowding the open spaces. The downside was the lack of Nutella and banana crepes. Bummer. The upside was a rickety construction elevator ride to the attics of the cathedral in Cologne. The highlight was stepping out and photographing parts of the cathedral unseen from ground level, such as the stone ornament of a supervisory mason with a mobile phone held to his ear!
